2009 Presentations and Sessions

Schedule is up, if your presenting add it to the timetable!

Who Can Speak at PodCamp London?

You can. Yes, you. Everyone can. Unlike a regular conference where speaking slots are allotted only to the highest bidder, Unconferences are by you, for you. If you don't see a session here that you want, create one and present it! Share what you know and your fellow participants will do the same.

To add a session, simply select the EDIT button above and add it to the page below the sessions already listed.

Types of Sessions and Presentations

  • Presentation: 30-45 minutes (we think so far) in a room of your peers. Help us all learn something new... The intelligence is in the room... discuss a topic that interests you... get everyone involved...

To add a session, simply select the Edit Page button above and add it to the page below the sessions already listed.

List of Sessions Offered and Sessions Wanted

Sessions Offered

Social 101, by Bill Wittur.  'Social 101' may mean a lot of different things to a lot of people.  The goal of this session will be to introduce and discuss the basics of social media.

Visual Identity by John Leschinski & Mathew Hoy - This awesome session is about the process of creating a consistent identity for new web brands.

Rewiring the Homo Sapiens by James Shelley - The tools that humans use shape humanity itself. In this session we will explore the rapidly shifting sociological implications of social networking and instantaneous information access. The question is equally important for hobbyists and professionals alike: how is the technology of new media re-wiring the way we think and relate to each other as human beings? We will explore the implications of this “re-wiring” on relationships, business, and our evolution as a society. Read More

Mixing Satellite Audio Drama by Robyn Paterson - Despite the scary sounding title, this session is about how to have fun using modern software to produce audio drama (aka radioplays) with hordes of people you've never met! It's fun and can really spice up your podcast!

Keeping up With Corporate/Mobile Marketing! by Melissa Cheater - Big Brands as early adopters of mobile & UGC marketing.

Free is Good! by John Meadows and Sean McGaughey. Podcasting doesn't have to be expensive! A survey of some of our favourite free (and often multi-platform) audio production tools.

Puppetvision: Puppetry and Podcasting by Andrew Young - A look at one of the funnest (and fuzziest!) trends in podcasting today; how puppets are being used in video podcasts and a quick overview of how to get started with your own puppet podcast.

Youth, Social Media, and the Web by Jonathan Kochis - Are youth as engaged in social media as we think?  What sort of limitations do they face from a web usability perspective?  This research-based session will look at youth and their use of social media and the web.

Drupal: Getting the Drop On the Social Web by Martin Anderson and Anthony Vella-Zarb - Drupal is an increasingly popular way to power your website. Join us as we talk about Drupal and why it's perfectly suited to the social web, including practical examples of integration with popular sites.

Slides are available at Pixelacious.ca.

Content Is King But Voice Is Queen by Stephanie Ciccarelli - Podcasters, learn how to take care of your voice, engage in a vocal warmup, speak clearly and become more confident behind the microphone in this interactive presentation. Discover how you can improve your voice over technique and achieve a personal best with regard to vocal performance.  Your audience will thank you!

Reach Out And Touch Someone by Daniele Rossi. You have the awesome ability to make positive changes to people's lives all over the world through your podcast and other social media tools. Who says Twitter is a waste of time?

Traditional Media Panel - Steve Groves and Dan Brown - How Traditional Media is using the social web. Sharing what what works, what doesn't, and what is just frustrating. Feel free to add your name if you have some experience!

Limitations to Growth - moderated by Bill Wittur.  An exploration of some of the limitations in Canada and elsewhere that may have an impact on the growth of social and the digital environment.  Some of the topics that I'm hoping to explore include Net Neutrality, the high cost of wireless / cell phone usage in Canada and the future of Canada's largest media conglomerates.

Ethics in Social Media - by Dave Fleet - Should I get someone to help me write my blog? Can I edit my Wikipedia page? What about being anonymous online? There are a huge number of ethical quandries for people and businesses to consider in the social media space. As it's a hot topic right now, this session will combine best practices and outlines of the problem with an interactive debate over the issues.

Mentor Lounge - Bill Deys - I'm going to try to book a few open time slots for a place where people new to the world of new media, and veterans in this space, can come together and make connections. People, by nature, are often too shy to break the ice and say hello to someone random, so we've designed the lounge to break down these barriers and allow for an easy forum for Q&A to occur.

Flash to the Future - by Mathew Hoy - We've all heard it before, "Okay, I've got this awesome idea for the opening for our video podcast. It involves a rotating logo, drops of water, flying shapes, milkshakes, and a chainsaw - all set to music! You'll totally love it!" This session talks about how to take your (insane) ideas for the opening of a video podcast, build them in Flash (using little more than a Wacom tablet and a good imagination), and get it video-ready.

Improving your Photography (for less than you paid to be here) - by Jason Fredin - How to produce great images for your website with equipment you probably already own.

The Practice of Brevity - by Adam Caplan - How to deliver a compelling, educational and entertaining message in two minutes or less.

Enterprise Social Software - by Andrew Sinclair - Many organizations are working on sophisticated campaigns to collaborate with customers, but often fail to engage employees with even the simplest of collaborative tools. This session will first talk about resistant managers and employees, and second about strategies to effectively implement enterprise social software.

Doctors, Lawyers and Web 2.0 - Gabe Boldt and Michael McAlpine - Two librarians present on how Web 2.0 is changing the medical and legal professions.

WordPress: An Introduction and Beyond - by Patrick Gregory - This free and powerful software can be used for blogging, web publishing and content management. This discussion will provide beginners with an introduction and advanced users with ideas and possibilities to take their existing knowledge further.

Twitter, Tweet, follow you...where? (Twitter 101) by Will Spaetzel.  The ins and outs of using Twitter. How to get started getting the most out of Twitter. Also will show how to connect Twitter to other networks.

The Art of the Title by Andrew Young - A fun look at the art and craft of designing creative title sequences and credits for video podcasts and how they can be used to brand your show. With sincere apologies, I have to cancel this session at the last minute due to unforseen circumstances. Check out Mathew Hoy's Flash To The Future session instead, as he's covering the same territory.

PodCamp 5 Track - As suggested by Bob Goyetche and worked on by the Canadian Podcasting Community!

1. Introducing Podcasting - John Meadows - brief history, how it works (RSS etc), listening to podcasts, finding podcasts

2. The Online Presence - James Wilkinson - Using Blogs, Websites, other tools out there to make your self know on the internet. We will touch on hosting your self, domains, and adding media to your presence in a way the whole world can see.

3 + 4 Combined Pro Audio/Video fundamentals for use with Pod/Vidcasting- by Edward Platero - Using a Pro Audio/Video approach to pod/vidcasting to make your podcast or vidcast look and sound great.  Starting with the basics of what you need to get started to publishing your final product.

5.Advanced Topics - PRESENTER NEEDED! - RSS, SEO, other topics of intellectual intrest!

(I had to cancel this one becuase of time constraints sorry guys - James Wilkinson)

Sessions Wanted

Please check the list above carefully, these topics may be covered already (just leaving them here so they know whats been requested to be covered).

Podcasting Change/News - I would love to hear how podcasting can be used as a tool for social change and to deliver upto date news.

podcasting 100 as requested is now in Sessions Offered -- still needed is ..

Podcasting 101 -  "Also where I can upload the mp3 file somewhere else so I can use my audio player plugin. What about making interviews with my voip phone and have the convo recorded on my computer."

Twitter, Tweet, follow you...where? (Twitter 101) Help me understands the ins and outs of Twitter.  How do I use it with other forms of social media (Facebook and LinkedIn) and how do you learn how to speak the 'tweet' language.

The Law of Two Feet

Simply put: your experience at PodCamp is what you want it to be. At any time, if you're not learning what you want to learn, if you're not getting what you need, you have every right to depart the session you're in and move to a different one, or none at all.

Session Recording

As much fun as attending PodCamp is, there are some who can't make it to the party for various reasons. As well, some people would love to grab an audio or video file of a session they were in, or one that was going on at the same time as one they were a part of. Please feel free to record the sessions and post them to the wiki for public use!

We have made plans to Live Stream and Record the sessions and we will make all of the media accessable after the event. Check the Blog closer to the event for links to the Live Video as well as the Back Channel Chat!

Collaborative Project

Digital Business Cards (name subject to change) - Kevin Van Lierop - A 90 second video where you let everyone know (1) who you are (2) what you do and (3) why you're at PodCamp London.  Tagged and uploaded to Flickr this project is a way to document everyone who was at the first PodCamp London.  For those like myself who always loose physical business cards I figure this would be an easy way to keep track of everyone and put a face/voice to a name.

I plan to get the ball rolling on April 25th but depending on how many people are actually there I most likely won't be able to tackle this alone.  With that said anyone wanting to spend 90 seconds to "interview" another attendee is more than welcome to help in what I hope can be a collaboration.

If you have a better name for this (I hope you do) please change it, or if you have someway to make this collaborative project better lets chat about it.

NOTE: I have yet to actually figure out how I will accomplish this feat on April 25th, most likely with my Macbook, but there is always the chance of me buying a Flip Video Camera before then.

List Your Recording Devices Here Please:

David Peralty, will be bringing a Flip Video Camera to record some sessions.

Phronk will be bringing a sharpened pencil and a single piece of loose leaf paper.
