Through A Rear-View Mirror Darkly: What the history of Vaudeville, Film, and Television can tell us about the future of video on the Web." Presented by Adam Caplan (@adamcaplan)

Marshall McLuhan, the Grandfather of 'electric media' (and its patron saint), was fond of saying that humanity builds its progress exclusively on its collective past, saying most famously "We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future."  This is no more nor less true today, and as Clive Thompson so eloquently noted, "Early TV broadcasts consisted of guys sitting around reading radio scripts because nobody had realized yet that TV could tell stories differently. It's the same with much of today's webcam video; most people still try to emulate TV and film" (link)

Looking at the innovations of motion pictures and television, from Eisenstien's invention of editing in 'The Battleship Potemkin' (that ended the notion of film as a document of vaudeville-like performances) to David Lynch's inadvertently interactive 'Twin Peaks,'  we'll take a modern-day look back at over a century of innovation in media and see if we can't get a sense for what's ahead, beyond the rear-view mirror.

Likely will contain no swearing.

The ISS (Instant Syndicating Standards) is an open set of standards that empowers individuals to discover and syndicate news and information through the help of their own personal social network. This challenges the top-down model of information-sharing and gives place to a bottom-up model, where each person has a unique voice and equal opportunity to contribute and benefit. In this talk I'll present ISS and associated technologies and discuss how they can foster the flow of information and collaboration at the UWO and the London community. For an overview, please see this post: http://nick.iss.im/2009/06/16/sharing-information-services-and-interactions-in-the-next-decade/

Contestants are then judged by the audience based on a set of criteria that isn't based on anything relevant at all.
